ludicrous speed

Here's an update on the rest of my morning. But first we take a quick look back to yesterday. We decided for some crazy reason that now would be a great time to fix up our upstairs bathroom. So Thad spent yesterday (and today) tearing it up while I watched Nate. The contents of our bathroom is now strewn around the house and I really couldn't tell you where anything specific is (except my allergy medicine - no worries there, mom!)

Now let's do the time warp again... we are back to 4am and I'm awake. After doing some misc. work I did indeed decide to take a shower. So I go to our downstairs bathroom where I did think to put some shampoo and turn on the hot water. After letting it run for a few minutes I realize that it not only isn't hot, but it is in fact much colder than when I first turned it on. Aargh. Turns out, Thad turned the water heater off at some point during the demo and forgot to turn it back on. I guess it just wasn't meant to be. I did end up getting some sleep, maybe a few hours, but no naps for me today as Crankenstein has returned. I'd love to go to bed early, but our adorable baby won't stop screaming. Sigh.

Here is our happy bathroom as it looked this morning. Those of you who've seen it before can attest that this is already a great improvement:

this is ridiculous

After a couple hours of sleep, I work up around 1am to feed Nate. Then I went back to bed only to lay there for a couple of hours tossing and turning. After close to four months of restless nights the infant in the house is now sleeping soundly, but for no apparent reason I am awake. I finally figured I'd get something done instead of just laying around, so I'm hanging out downstairs doing work, trying not to wake the sleeping baby or his dad. My mom often says to try to look at the bright side of things (I can hear the little Monty Python jingle now... "do do, do do do do do do!") so I'm seriously considering taking a shower, since this may be the only time I can do that with some assurity that I don't need to worry about rushing.

the end

We recently went for a one month check-up with the pediatric dermatologist and Nate passed her exam with flying colors. His bum got an A+ and we don't need to go back anymore. Hooray! The yeast, infection, inflammation, and rash woes have been hereby banished from our little buddy's rear. Sol - now's your last chance for the bum jokes.

sweetie pie

Nate's really cute these days. He is unfortunately not so cute at this exact moment, as he is upstairs crying instead of sleeping, but you can't win them all. He's getting more and more interactive and smiles a ton. Thad makes him smile most of all, but I'm getting a bunch too (and so are random people in Wegmans or wherever we happen to be.) His newest trick is putting things in his mouth. He can grab onto things and then stuff them in. He hasn't figured out that he can reach out for things yet and is grabbing accidentally, but if he touches something he grabs on for dear life. He can also grab his foot. Usually the left one. His vision is also much better, which is somewhat problematic because he can now see the tv, so now we can't watch stuff if he's around. He can hold his head up really well too (he was always good at that) so we can now have him facing out in the baby carrier. This is really cool because he can see so much more, although I also realized it can be a problem at the grocery store. I kept accidentally sticking him into refrigerated cases and things. And we luckily averted disaster by the veggie mister. I need go-go-gadget-arms.

Okay, he's still crying. I should go...

marital distress

So I got yet another splinter today while bouncing around the house with Nate. If they don't wiggle out on their own, Thad, our resident surgeon, usually removes them with our trusty tweezers. They are pointy at the end, not the blunt kind frequently used for excessive body hair, so they work well for splinters. So tonight over dinner I say nonchalantly, "I have a splinter. Could you help take it out?" To which my lovely husband replies, "Sure." Then he goes into the kitchen and returns with our chef's knife. I give him a startled look and he chuckles and puts it back (I say "back" instead of "away" because he returned it to the drying rack where he found it, not to the knife holder where it "lives." He washed it so I probably shouldn't complain.) Next he picks up a paring knife. I think, "Haha! That joker! He has another knife. How funny." But after a few seconds I realize that he is SERIOUS! I freak out but he thinks it's perfectly normal to remove a splinter with a 4-inch knife. "What's the difference," he asked, "between the point on the knife and the point on the tweezers? They do the same thing." But I was too freaked out and, leaving my husband in disbelief, am now sitting here typing with a shard of hardwood flooring in my foot.

So the question is, am I crazy (with regards to the splinter/knife issue, not in general. We all clearly know that answer)? Or has Sweeney Thad gone off the deep end?

Is removing splinters with kitchen knives a disturbing prospect?

laughing?

We think Nate has started laughing, although it might just be happy squealing. What do you think?

not that I think he's dumb...

...but does anyone remember Dumb Donald from the Fat Albert cartoon?
